Right, So This Is A Slightly Different One From Me

If you’re new here, hi, I’m Kate. Usually it’s renovation content, questionable airing cupboard organisation, and general new build chaos. Today’s post is a bit different, but stick with me.

Most of us assume our cleaning sprays are safe. After all, they’re supposed to make our homes healthier by killing germs, right?

Unfortunately, a lot of popular sprays are loaded with harsh chemicals that we breathe in and absorb through our skin with every spray. And these chemicals don’t just disappear. They leave behind invisible residue on the counters, tables and doorknobs your kids are touching (and licking, let’s be honest) all day long.

One study found that using standard household cleaning sprays just once a week can have a similar impact on your lungs as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. That genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

These chemicals have been linked to

  • ·Declining lung function
  • ·Asthma
  • ·Rhinitis
  • ·Persistent wheezing
  • ·Systemic inflammation

Especially concerning for women, children and pets. So basically, everyone in my house.

What’s Really In Your Cleaning Sprays?

Here’s what a lot of mainstream sprays are hiding:

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs)

Ammonia derivatives used as disinfectants, linked to respiratory inflammation and reduced lung function.

Phthalates

Often hidden under the single word “fragrance”, and linked to hormone imbalances and fertility issues.

Formaldehyde

A known carcinogen that can be released when cleaning chemicals react with air.

Chlorine

Mixing chlorine-based products with acidic cleaners can create a toxic gas that burns lung tissue.

The Checklist

What To Look For In A Truly Non-Toxic Spray

  • Plant-derived or low-impact ingredients

Ingredients that break down naturally rather than building up in your home.

  • QAC-free formula

No lung irritants in something you spray into the air you breathe.

  • Certifications and ingredient transparency

So you're not just taking a brand's word for it.

How I Tested These

I put five of the most talked-about non-toxic cleaning sprays through the same five tests, each scored out of 100.

  1. 1Cleaning Performance - does it actually clean?
  2. 2Health & Safety - are the ingredients genuinely non-toxic?
  3. 3Ease Of Use - does it create a hassle?
  4. 4Eco-Friendliness - is it actually sustainable?
  5. 5Value For Money - is it worth the price?

Dip Multi-Purpose Cleaning Sheets

The best all-round non-toxic clean I have tested

Dip Multi-Purpose Cleaning Sheets
Format
Sheets
Number of bottles
4
Price per bottle
£2.90
Works on all surfaces
Yes
Subscription
Yes (20% off)

I genuinely wasn’t expecting a sheet to outperform actual spray bottles, but here we are.

Cleaning Performance: Baked-on grease on the hob, sticky counter residue, tea and coffee rings, all lifted cleanly. Even smudgy glass shower doors came up streak-free, which basically never happens for us.

Health & Safety: No QACs, no hormone disruptors, no carcinogens. Only plant-derived or lower-impact ingredients. Fully transparent about what’s in it, including the fragrance, which is rarer than it should be.

Ease Of Use: Comes with a free reusable glass bottle and microfibre cloth. Drop the sheet in, add water, done. No spills, no measuring concentrate.

Eco-Friendliness: FSC-certified, home compostable, 100% recyclable packaging. Up to 90% lighter than a normal spray bottle, so less CO2 to ship it to your door.

What sold me: The scent is Ocean Spa, light and clean rather than the headache-inducing artificial fragrance most sprays have. And no more replacing bulky plastic bottles every time one breaks.

Pros

  • Best cleaning performance of the five
  • Cleanest ingredients, fully transparent
  • Free glass bottle and cloth included
  • Plastic-free, compostable packaging

Cons

  • ·Only available on their website
  • ·Light fragrance, only one scent option

Purdy & Figg Counter Clean

Beautiful bottle, brilliant on kitchen grease

Purdy & Figg Counter Clean
Format
Concentrates
Number of bottles
3
Price per bottle
£3.75
Works on all surfaces
Yes

Comes with a lovely glass bottle for life, concentrated refill vials and a cloth to get started. Once diluted, it left our kitchen tiles spotless and cut through countertop grease easily.

Struggled a bit in the bathroom though, needing more scrubbing on shampoo buildup and soap scum than I’d like.

Pros

  • Stylish refillable bottle
  • Gorgeous essential oil scents
  • Effective on kitchen messes

Cons

  • ·Needs more effort on bathroom grime
  • ·Vials messy to pour
  • ·Pricier per refill than Dip

Kit & Kin All Purpose Cleaner

100% natural ingredients, powered by orange oil

Kit & Kin All Purpose Cleaner
Format

Number of bottles
2
Price per bottle
£3.00
Works on all surfaces
Yes

Powered by essential orange oil with 100% natural ingredients. It cut through grease and soap scum well and left most surfaces streak-free.

Comes in a refill pouch you’re meant to send back. Nice idea, but the pouch is bulky and honestly, I’d probably end up binning it rather than posting it back.

Pros

  • 100% natural ingredients
  • Effective on grease
  • Pleasant citrus scent

Cons

  • ·Messy refill process
  • ·Only 2 refills in the starter pack
  • ·Thicker consistency to pour

Homethings Multi-Surface Cleaner

The cheapest option on the list

Homethings Multi-Surface Cleaner
Format
Tablets
Number of bottles
3
Price per bottle
£1.50
Works on all surfaces
Yes

Low-cost, tablet-based system with a sturdy reusable bottle. It removed grease from the hob well, but left glass surfaces streaky, and the tablet didn’t fully dissolve without a proper shake.

Pros

  • Lowest cost option
  • Good cleaning performance
  • Lighter than liquids

Cons

  • ·Doesn't dissolve quickly
  • ·Contains unnecessary colourant
  • ·No subscription discount

Neat Multi-Surface Cleaner

Cleans well, but the QAC question holds it back

Neat Multi-Surface Cleaner
Format
Concentrates
Number of bottles
4
Price per bottle
£2.50
Works on all surfaces
Yes

Sleek, minimal bottle, strong fresh scent, and it cleaned well with minimal effort. It placed last mainly because of their potential use of QACs, which isn’t ideal after everything I read about lung health.

Pros

  • Strong fresh scent
  • Cleans thoroughly
  • Fine even spray

Cons

  • ·Opaque bottle makes it hard to see when it's empty
  • ·More expensive one-time purchase
  • ·Potential use of QACs

    No QACs, no harsh fumes.

  3. 3

    Super Effective

Matched or beat every spray on tough kitchen and bathroom messes.

  4. 4

    Eco-Friendly Packaging

FSC-certified, compostable, 90% lighter to ship.

  5. 5

First Cleaning Sheet Spray In The UK

Once you've used it, going back to a spray bottle feels a bit backwards.

My Final Word

I genuinely didn’t expect to end up this converted. I’m not about to pretend I’ve turned into a wellness guru. I still enjoy a Fanta on holiday and I will absolutely still get distracted by good weather rather than filming content, as you well know.

But this was a properly easy swap that made sense once I actually tested it, rather than just took a brand’s word for it.
